Phase Two

Section 3 – HS2 area

Work in this section is due to start towards the end of 2026.

Section 4 – Meriden Street, Coventry Street and New Canal Street

Construction is now well underway in Meriden Street, with the road closed between High Street and Bordesley Street for the next few months as we complete that section of work. Track and drainage have been installed up to the Coventry Street junction, and we hope to have that section back open again in the near future.

Work will then continue between the Coventry Street and Bordesley Street junction.

In New Canal Street, utility diversion work is nearing completion ahead of construction moving in later this year. The road is currently one-way, with traffic heading down towards Meriden Street. Clearly signed, localised diversions are in place.

Section 5 – Digbeth High Street

Work is now complete on this section.

Extension Overview

The Secretary of State for Transport has announced that he has decided to make the Midland Metro (Birmingham City Eastside Extension) Order and relevant documents to this order can be found via the Statutory Information tab below.

The Birmingham Eastside Metro extension to Digbeth will serve the High Speed 2 (HS2) station at Curzon Street, separating from the existing West Midlands Metro line at Bull Street.

The route is planned to consist of 1.7km of twin track running from Bull Street to a new terminus at High Street Deritend. The scheme includes four permanent West Midlands Metro stops serving the east of Birmingham City Centre.

In 2023, Transport for West Midlands announced plans for an additional temporary terminus near the Clayton Hotel which will allow the tramway to enter operational service earlier (currently proposed for 2025/2026).

The extension will service the Eastside regeneration area offering connections with New StreetMoor Street and Snow Hill Railway Stations, in addition to the new HS2 station. The scheme also includes a new bus interchange adjacent to Clayton Hotel Birmingham to provide an efficient bus, Sprint and coach interchange with HS2.

The first phase of the Birmingham Eastside Metro Extension to Millennium Point opened to passengers on Easter Sunday (5 April) 2026 adding two new stops to the network and allowing easy access to key Eastside locations such as Moor Street Station, Thinktank, Millennium Point and the Clayton Hotel.

Delivery for the connecting phases between Meriden Street and the forthcoming HS2 Station at Curzon Street is currently underway with construction currently ongoing in Meriden Street with an aim to begin with at the HS2 site as soon as possible.

The headline benefits of this route are...

  • More people using the Metro in this area for day-to-day travel, resulting in journey time savings and reduced congestion
  • Providing new and improved public transport links for the East of Birmingham City Centre and Digbeth allowing easy travel between population, education and employment centres of the city
  • Connecting the HS2 station to the Metro network and maximising interchange opportunities with various modes of public transport including bus, train, sprint and coach
  • Regeneration across the area including the major developments throughout the area

What is the outline programme for delivery?

Main construction began spring 2021 with the initial activity for the route (track replacement in Corporation Street and installation of a complex delta junction on Lower Bull Street) completed on schedule. Since then work has been delivered in two areas of the city - with work to construct the tramway in Lower Bull Street, along with delivery of urban realm improvements, completed by July 2023.

Similar activity along Digbeth High Street, which also got underway in 2021, is almost complete as of May 2024 and involves considerable track work along with a transformative urban realm programme.

In April 2024, activity began in Albert Street and Moor Street Queenway with the site currently being prepared for trackbed and tram infrastructure to be installed.

What service is expected to run on the extension?

  • Service frequency will be six to eight minutes service during peak times with a 10 - 15 minute service off-peak.
  • Monday to Friday: 04:40 to 00:15
  • Saturday: 04:40 to 01:00
  • Sunday: 07:20 to 00:10 at 15 minute frequency.
